Technical Architecture & Kinematics
Engineering Principles of High-Density Mobile Shelving for Northern European Standards
Mobile shelving systems—spanning from mechanical gear-reduction hand-crank archive stacks to motorized heavy-duty mobile pallet racking (MOVO)—operate on a deceptively straightforward architectural mandate: eliminate dedicated access corridors and replace them with a single, dynamically created operational aisle. However, the engineering complexity behind successful implementation in Danish facilities centers on kinetic mass transfer, wheel-rail interface friction, floor point-loading distribution under Eurocode 2 (DS/EN 1992), and compliance with European Safety Standard DS/EN 15095 (Power-operated mobile decking, racking and shelving).
When engineering an assembly that can carry upwards of 400 metric tons on a single bank of mobile carriages, structural deflection must be constrained within rigid tolerances. Unlike stationary racking governed solely by static vertical loads and horizontal shear, mobile systems introduce continuous cyclic dynamic forces. Acceleration and deceleration profiles executed by variable-frequency drive (VFD) motors subject upright columns, diagonal bracing trusses, and beam-end connectors to alternating inertial loads. If cold-rolled upright profiles exhibit torsional weakness or if beam connectors lack anti-fatigue hook geometries, systemic deflection occurs, leading to carriage binding, rail derailment, and catastrophic structural degradation.
Kinematic Rail Integration & Floor Tolerances under BR18
Danish Building Regulations (Bygningsreglementet BR18) demand strict structural accountability regarding live loads, concrete slab deflection, and thermal performance. Installing mobile shelving requires surgical evaluation of the underlying slab. Our engineering department specifies three core track deployment methods customized to Danish site conditions:
1. Recessed Precision Track with Epoxy Screed: Used in greenfield logistic developments in areas like Taulov, Køge, and Horsens. Ground steel rail profiles (such as 45Mn / C45 alloy steel) are cast flush directly into slab cutouts, leveled via micro-adjustment jacking bolts to tolerances of ±1.0 mm over a 10-meter span, and backfilled with non-shrink high-early-strength epoxy grout. This eliminates trip hazards and permits pallet trucks and VNA reach trucks to cross freely.
2. Surface-Mounted Inverted Angle Rail with Sloped Access Ramps: Deployed in leased commercial premises or historic preservation buildings across central Copenhagen and Aarhus where floor cutting is restricted. Rails are chemically anchored into existing C25/30 concrete slabs using ETA-approved anchors, paired with modular ramp profiles that permit ergonomic operator access.
3. Heavy Elevated Steel Sub-Base with Dynamic Load Distribution: When sub-slabs cannot support concentrated linear wheel loads (which frequently reach 25 kN to 80 kN per wheel in pallet-load operations), we design structural steel grillage platforms that dissipate point loads across wider surface areas, safeguarding moisture barriers and floor insulation layers.
Kinetic Safety & Control Architecture (DS/EN 15095)
For electrically driven mobile installations serving Danish operations, functional safety is non-negotiable. Our electrical mobile bases integrate safety architectures adhering to Performance Level d (PL d) according to ISO 13849-1:
• Multi-Beam Safety Photocell Barriers: Optical light curtains mounted at 50mm (foot-level) and 600mm above finished floor level along the carriage face immediately disengage motor power if an operator or misplaced carton interrupts the beam while an aisle is in motion.
• Physical Kick Bars & Pressure-Sensitive Flanges: Full-length bottom trip bars ensure mechanical microswitch shut-off upon minimal physical contact, serving as fail-safe redundancies to optical sensors.
• Integrated Fire Brigade / Sprinkler Parking Function: In the event of a facility fire alarm trigger from Danish municipal monitoring systems, the mobile carriage bank automatically shifts into predetermined parking gaps (typically 120-150mm uniform spacing), permitting sprinkler discharge to reach lower tiers unimpeded.
